How were the kitesurf lessons?

Had a really good time taking lessons with these guys! Highly recommend this school. Instructors speak French and English fluently, they have good knowledge of the local wind enabling them to be on point with lessons and work around different conditions, real sense of investment from their behalf as they prepare the schedule for the following day 1 day ahead and make sure you only hop on the board when it's worth it, give lessons over walkies which facilitates the communication and instructions enormously and finally their gear in terms of sails and equipment is up to date - which is always nice when learning a new watersport :) Wish them all the best as they really deserve it! Thank you Freeride tarifa

How were the kitesurf lessons?

I was in great hands at Freeride Tarifa! As a beginner I felt that they really take time and effort to share their knowledge and passion about kite surfing. I also liked the fact that they wouldn't just put you in a class when the wind wasn't all that great. They honestly try to get the best for you and this combined with the awesome planning skills of Vanessa, it all works out very well. The equipment was top of the line and never failed.
I heard some horror stories about other schools and their safety measurements.

Besides the fact they run a legitimate company, the people there are super-friendly and try to help you whenever they can regarding places to stay or eat.

Having some beers and relaxing chat with them comes with the package ;-)

Thank you!

How did you like the accommodation?

I did the 20 hour lesson and accommodation kite surfing package with Freeride Tarifa kite school run by Olivier and Vanessa. They are a fantastic team. Before booking Vanessa sent me extensive information about the lessons and how to get to Tarifa from Malaga. She got back to me with all my queries super quickly and was very friendly and genuine. So I had an excellent impression and booked the package deal. When I arrived Vanessa gave me more information about the hostel and I found it no problem. We arranged a pick up for my first day of lessons and Olivier brought me to the beach. First impressions were great - Olivier was very friendly and natural with perfect English (Vanessa also).

How were the kitesurf lessons?

I never kite surfed before so was a complete novice. We first went through theory of wind and kite control and this instruction was very clear. Olivier used a white board to explain different wind zones and that image and explanation gave the perfect grounding for the rest of the lessons. The rest of the week was fantastic. Olivier was extremely patient, very friendly and natural and we got on well. The only thing that let me down was my lack of ability! Olivier did everything possible to get me kiting but I didn't really get on the board for very long. The kite control was fine and I was comfortable body dragging in the sea. But I struggled to get my feet into the board to actually get surfing. My flexibility was an issue and I didn't manage the board correctly so it got caught in the current alot forcing me to let it go (the board never the kite!). When that happens you have to work the kite to body drag back to the board. This unfortunately cost me a lot of time and I didn't manage to get up and surfing much. I cannot fault Oliviers instruction in any way and I was genuinely very impressed with everything. In short Freeride Tarifa captures the overall spirit of Tarifa....very friendly, inclusive and welcoming. I was sad to leave but I truly intend to return to kite with Freeride Tarifa in the future.

I absolutely recommend it to anyone thinking about going. Oh yeah, Vanessa took some great photos and caught my few times I got up on the board! Thank you both for everything!

How did you like the accommodation?

Fantastic choice. went there to share an outdoors experience with my two sons and we really enjoyed the place, the sport and the teachers! Freeride Tarifa took care of us, providing top kite gear and enjoyable kite lessons adapted to each one's learning curve while keeping us safe under Tarifa high wind. In addition they found an apartment for us to stay and gave us plenty of tips to explore Tarifa's nightlife.. Highly recommended!

Tarifa is situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its unique location means it enjoys a beautiful blend of Spanish and Arabic cultures. It’s one of the most scenic villages in Andalusia and is well regarded as a kitesurfer’s paradise. With endless stretches of white sandy beaches and over 300 windy days a year, Tarifa is a hub for all watersports.

Main Kitesurf Beach: Los Lances Beach and Valdevaqueros Beach

Los Lances beach

Los Lances beach

Level: All Levels

Roughly 5km from Tarifa center. Expect wide, white sandy beaches and plenty of space to launch and land the kite. During the summer the beach is divided in two main zones: the one for the kitesurfing schools and the one for the independent riders. There are also a few chiringuito (beach bars) nearby, so refuelling is easy.

Valdevaqueros beach

Level: All Levels

About 8km from Tarifa. At one end, you have a massive dune and plenty of space to launch and land the kite. At the other, the beach is more narrow and has a few rocks scattered about, so it’s best to be aware. It’s a great beach to learn kitesurfing and chill with there are 3 main bars that face the ocean.
